The Contribution of  UNESCO Chairs to the process of achieving sustainable development goals (values of social tolerance, gender equality and a global partnership for development)

Networking of UNESCO Chairs in the Russian Federation  is a step towards  the implementation of mainstream UN programmes shaping a new system of values and setting priorities in development.

The Chair on Culture of Peace and Democracy (UNESCO) RSUH, being interdisciplinary by its nature, carries out a number complex scientific and research and educational projects in the process of achieving The Millennium Development Goals.

The Chair on Culture of Peace and Democracy takes an active part in the implementation of the UNESCO's mainstream educational and research programmes. This is not only an integral part of professional and research activity of the Chair, but also  a unique opportunity to involve young scholars in the most pressing issues promoted by the international organizations and the expert centers.

The Chair on Culture of Peace and Democracy fosters the achievement of the  Millennium Development Goals in the field of social and human sciences where one is priorities is gender equality programme and empowering women in the first place through offering equal opportunities in education. University environment gives an opportunity to specify the universal level of the value of gender equality by the concrete professional Russian national experience, and the broadening of the project framework by regional expert participation brings a radically different level of innovations in approaches to the problem.

The Chair does innovative research  and applied projects in the field of social tolerance and healthy life style including the fight against drugs done in the frame of the programme of strategic development of the Russian State University for the Humanities.

The concept of research in the field of  social tolerance is based on the notion that modernity is defined not through the economic and political indicators, but through social cultural and thus multicultural dimensions. This approach allows to define modernity as a complex controversial phenomenon and dynamic diversity. And diversity is seen as one of objective grounds shaping value level and dynamic characteristics. Touching upon this problem it should be noted that the dynamics of historic development brought about a more complicated system of diversity and gradual emergence of the prerequisites for further development and various cultures survival and value retention. This situation brings about a number of consequences, firstly, learning about the ways to react to this phenomenon and analyze to what extent the principles of multiculturalism work in a different setting, secondly, distinguishing a special mission of the mainstream cultures.

The project is also devoted to the conflict and consensus analysis in the context of diversity retention. It's also noted that conflicts are getting more and more complex and the functions are transformed revealing new features and traits of consensus as the basic principle of interaction.

Phycological aspects of social tolerance are quite important. First and foremost, this topic is explored through the mechanisms of the image of “the other” as well as the strategies of dealing with other cultures and preserving one's own identity. The range of factors preventing the creation of the  system of global partnership are analyzed in this context too.

Another aspect in the search for a new approach to global partnership is a thorough analysis of the social and cultural features of modern development preventing from advancing in this area. A special emphasis is placed on the characteristics of social dynamics that shape social processes and influence the access and the availability of information technology and mass culture transformation.

A special focus in the course of research is on working out theoretical principles of access to information and social tolerance. It's believed that these principles are underpinned by the increasing tendency of information value and its high dynamics and new channels of distribution characterized by a number of controversies. Thus,   information transparency and the access to new information technologies are prerequisites for multidimensional  and diverse social environment.

These complex research done by the Chair is priority in achieving the millennium development goals and in order to ensure sustainable development it's not only important to highlight the spheres characterized by the internal social tension, requiring special approaches and solving in-depth causes preventing from bringing co-operation and partnership to a different level in the achieving new goals of sustainable development.
