On 14-16 May 2009, Minsk (Belarus) will host the International Conference on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
The Conference is organized by the Government of the Republic of Belarus, the Council on Cooperation in Education of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the UNESCO Moscow Office in cooperation with the European Training Foundation (ETF), the UNESCO International Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNESCO-UNEVOC - Bonn), the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE – Moscow) and the International Bureau of Education (IBE - Geneva).
The Conference aims to enhance the role of TVET to meet educational, economic and social needs of the CIS Member States.
Among the expected participants to the Conference are Ministers of Education of the CIS countries, Estonia, Finland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. Participation in the Conference of the Ministers of Education will encourage the adoption of important policy recommendations on further activities to develop TVET in the CIS and strengthen cooperation in this field. It will also help include discussion of the role of TVET in times of the global economic crisis with its social consequences on the agenda of high-level meetings, including the XVII Conference of the CIS Ministers of Education.
The Conference agenda includes a round table meeting to discuss cooperation between UNESCO and the CIS in the sphere of education.
Along with the Ministers of Education, the Conference is expected to bring together heads of TVET departments and divisions of the Ministries of Education, directors and rectors of vocational education development institutes; educational policy makers and authorities; representatives of the CIS Intergovernmental Foundation for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation (IFESCCO), the CIS Statistics Committee, the CIS Executive Secretariat; experts from the ETF, the World Bank, the International Labor Organization, UNESCO Headquarters, the UNESCO Moscow Office, UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), IBE, UNESCO-UNEVOC, National Coordinators of the CIS UNEVOC Network and others.
Based on the Conference outcomes a comprehensive study of the development of TVET in the CIS will be conducted with the aim to harmonize statistical reporting and national qualifications standards in the sphere of TVET in the CIS countries.
The Conference in Minsk is a timely follow-up to the World Conference on ESD – “Moving into the Second Half of the UN Decade”, organized under the UNESCO auspices in Bonn (Germany) on 31 March – 2 April 2009 (http://www.esd-world-conference-2009.org/).
