SUBREGIONAL EXPERTS' MEETING ON HUMAN RIGHTS WITHIN UNESCO’S COMPETENCE WILL BE HELD IN MOSCOW


On the 28th of May, 2008 in Moscow State Institute of International Affairs (MGIMO-University) the United Nations Association of Russia, the UNESCO Chair of Moscow State Institute of International Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia in cooperation with the UNESCO Moscow Office and with the support of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO and the UNESCO Headquarters (Paris) are organizing a one-day Subregional Experts' Meeting on Human Rights within UNESCO’s Competence. The meeting is organized in the framework of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The agenda of the meeting includes the discussion of the subject of human rights within the competence of UNESCO: the right to education; the right to participate in cultural life; the right to freedom of opinion and expression, including the right to seek, receive and impart information; and the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications, making a particular emphasis on the right to education as a pre-requisite for the implementation of all other human rights. Also the participants will analyze national policies and programmes in the countries of the region, identify the obstacles to the implementation of human rights and propose ways and means to improve their realization in the region, paying particular attention to such important factors as gender equality and freedom from all forms of discrimination.

One of the main point of the agenda of the meeting will be the discussion on the creation of the UNESCO European Research Network on Human Rights aimed at facilitating the close cooperation of various stakeholders in the field of human rights policy-making, research and education, and at disseminating relevant information among decision-makers and other stakeholders.
