In August – September 2006 with the support of the UNESCO Moscow Office the Social-ecological Center “Eco-sphere” (Azerbaijan) conducted master-classes on traditional napless carpet weaving for young craftswomen from the Gala settlement, Azerbaijan.
The support of the UNESCO Moscow Office to this project was provided in the framework of its programme aimed at advancing traditional crafts for sustainable development in the cluster countries.
The objective of the project was to revive the Azerbaijani tradition of carpet waiving for sustainable development, increase the professional level of craftsmen with a special emphasis on women, and promote souvenir production which will ultimately contribute to economic growth, social cohesion, poverty alleviation and increase of personal income.
The Social-ecological Center “Eco-sphere” developed a special teaching programme for young craftswomen. The master-classes were attended by young girls – residents of the Gala settlement, who had basic skills of carpet waiving. During the master-classes the girls leaned the history, tradition and schools of caper waving in Azerbaijan, napless caper waving techniques and methodology, and various types of souvenir production.
The Social-ecological Center “Eco-sphere” published a manual “Napless Carpets of Azerbaijan” in Azerbaijani and Russian and a CD with the best examples of Azerbaijani carpets to be used in the future teaching projects.
