UNESCO WORKING GROUP MEETING ON ECOHYDROLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TOOK PLACE IN TULCEA, ROMANIA

On 5-7 October 2006 under the auspices of UNESCO and National Institute for Hydrology and Water Management of Romania a meeting of the UNESCO Working Group on “Ecohydrology and Sustainable Development in Deltas, Estuaries, Coastal Areas and Lagoons” and an International seminar were organized in Tulcea, Romania.

The ecohydrology is a new discipline, which combines the methods of hydrology, both physical and chemical, with those of the ecology, in view to obtain accurate answers to the actual sustainable water management and frame water EU Directive requirements.

The WG meeting was held within the framework of the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme Phase VI (IHP-VI) and “Man and Biosphere” (MAB) joint Main Line of Action in Ecohydrology, and in particular of those activities supported by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science in Europe (UNESCO-BRESCE). It was also follow-up to activities during the period 2003-2005 which led to the launching of an international working group on the application of the ecohydrologycal approach to Coastal Areas, Deltas, Estuaries and Lagoons Management.

The main objectives of the Working Group and International Seminar were:

  1. Contributions of ecohydrology as the basis for planning sustainable development in micro-tidal Deltas, Estuaries, Coastal Areas and Lagoons.
  2. Different experiences of control of eutrophication, hydrology, biology and pollution in diverse areas, use of modeling and different ecohydrologyc techniques.
  3. Comparison of different regions and different ecological conditions, determination of key parameters which control eutrophicathion, hydrology and biology, toxic blooms, invasion of new species etc.
  4. Determination of measures of control and restoration for polluted and eutrophicated ecosystems.
  5. Test of the developed ecohydrological model applicability in different areas.
  6. Comparing the functioning of micro-tidal and macro-tidal deltas, estuaries, coastal areas and lagoons.

During the three days, more than 20 papers were presented by foreign and Romanian scientists on Danube, Danube Delta, Black See, Volga Delta, Guadyana Estuary, Kastela Bay and other reference areas. On 6 October 2006 a 10 hours study tour was organized in the Danube Delta to compare the conditions of a micro-tidal Delta like the Danube Delta, with macro-tidal estuaries.

The seminar was attended by more then 30 experts from Australia, Croatia, Greece, Germany, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Russia, Romania. Also Philippe Pypaert from UNESCO-BRESCE-Venice was present. The Astrakhanskiy Biosphere Reserve (Volga Delta) was represented by Alexander Gorbunov, Scientific Director. The main objective of the seminar was to illustrate how ecohydrology can support the sustainable development in deltas, estuaries, lagoons and coastal areas and disseminate the knowledge on this new discipline - the ecohydrology -between the young scientists. Also the seminar emphasized the application of ecohydrology in a few specific areas like the Danube Delta, Volga Delta, Guadyana Estuary and Kastela Bay.

During the Working Group Meeting, a decision was taken to organize the next meeting in Russia, in the Volga Delta. Two training activities will be organized next year - one in Lodz, Poland, and another one - in Russia, in the Volga Delta area, under the coordination of prof. Maciej Zalewski, Poland, Eric Wolanski, Australia, and Luis Chicharo, Portugal. The courses will be focalized on trainings in the field of ecohydrology and mathematical modeling of such complex phenomena. Three-four month practice in laboratories for students and young scientists will be organized under the supervision of Working Group members and with the UNESCO BRESCE support.
